Softball

We haven't been having much fun lately, so I had to dig into my picture archives for this story. In Utah back in the summer of 2005, I decided that I wanted to play softball. I had just started working at a credit union, and they had a co-ed city league softball team, so I decided to join. I always wanted to play softball growing up, but my mom thought I had too many other things going on, plus she didn't want to sit outside in the summer humidity of Arkansas and watch my games :). I played tee ball when I was in first grade or so, but I hadn't played baseball or softball since. Here I am warming up. I know I looked like a natural. haha Brock told me not to let them put me in the outfield because I wouldn't get to do anything, so when they suggested I play 3rd base, I said sure even though I was really nervous.
At one point, the ball was hit straight to me, but I was too scared and didn't react fast enough to catch it. I felt really bad, so when I was asked to play catcher instead, I felt much better.
Well, I apparently was no good at playing catcher either because the ball bounced off the ground and hit me in the face. There's a reason that catchers are supposed to wear masks. I got some ice and my lip swelled a little, but I was fine.
I kept playing, but I was no good at all, so I didn't go to any more games after that. My brother was visiting that week too, so I was really embarrassed.
After some practice, I decided to try again the next year. I joined a girls intramural team from our BYU ward, and I felt much more confident. I guess I felt safer too since girls don't usually hit or throw as hard as boys. Later that summer, we had a co-ed team from our ward, and that was so much fun. Brock and I practiced a lot, and I got way better. I managed to play 1st base pretty well, but my hitting never was that great. I never played catcher again. I refused to. Unfortunately, we had to move to Texas in the middle of the tournament. We were really sad because we were having fun. I haven't really played since then, but maybe one of these days we'll get into it again.
