Houston

We were in Houston this last week. Brock's grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins on his mom's side live down there. When we lived in College Station we used to visit often because it was less than 2 hours away, but we hadn't been there since we moved to Kentucky. All the kids seemed much older. Brock's the oldest grandchild of Kent and Gaye. He's also the only one married and the only one with a child, making Pierce the first great grandchild on that side. I think he really enjoyed meeting all the relatives, and he's at the perfect age now where he's totally alert and aware of everything going on around him. He just loves to watch people.
Part of the reason we went down there was because Brock had to work there for 3 days. It just so happened that his immediate family had a trip to Houston planned the very same week so his sister could go to EFY with her cousins. It was perfect timing, so we just had to buy one ticket, and Pierce and I went too. It was Pierce's first time flying. Luckily we had direct flights both ways. He did great on the way there. On the flight home, he got a little cranky toward the end because he was tired and couldn't get comfortable enough to fall asleep. People said he did good on both flights, but I believed them more on the first one. Brock has decided that we're never flying anywhere again with a baby. I think we'll get better at it.
Brock's cousin Kiger turned 13 on the 11th. He wanted to cook for everyone for his party. It was a Hawaiin themed dinner. When we arrived, we were greeted at the door by a hostess who took our names and then took us individually to our poolside table in the backyard. We had waitresses and menus. The food was delicious, and the decorations looked great. I thought the whole thing was very cute and fun. Pierce held on tight to Grandma Gaye's finger for most of the dinner.
Brock turned 28 on the 13th. We celebrated it with the whole extended family. He requested his mom's specialty, roast beef. The Roarks always go all out on cooking for a crowd. They know what everyone's favorite side dish is, and they're sure to have it all. It was really good. I ate the leftovers for about 6 meals in a row. :) His dad made him a good carrot cake too which I ate way too much of.
One night we were there, we met up with our good friends Patrick and Amber from College Station. They're expecting a baby girl in December! They got some Texas A&M gifts for Pierce including this cute little onesie! Thanks!
Brock got to play on the lake with his brother, sister, and cousins.
The only down side of the trip was that Brock's grandma and I got sick. We thought it was something we ate, but we couldn't really think of what it could be. It may have just been a flu or virus. I was still sick yesterday when we came home, but I think I'm all better today. I hear she's better today too. On the positive side, if you've just had a baby, and you're still trying to lose weight, getting sick is a good way to lose some quick pounds. :)
We had a great time in Houston, aside from Brock's having to work and my getting sick. It was nice to have a lot of people around to entertain Pierce. Now that we're back I feel bad that he has to just hang out with me all day. I can't be nearly as exciting as a house full of people. Kent and Gaye are so nice and really make us feel at home when we visit. I've always felt very welcome and comfortable visiting them. That's why we love Houston!
