Smiley Boy

Here are some pictures I got of Pierce smiling. Sorry that they're a little blurry. He wiggles a lot when he's happy. Come to think of it, he wiggles a lot when he's not happy too.

We found out yesterday that he has thrush. I was worried about that from day 1 because I read that if you take antibiotics you're more susceptible to it. Since I started taking antibiotics right after I had him for my sinus infection, I was a little parnoid. His tongue was white but there weren't any white patches anywhere else in his mouth. I asked around too, and everyone told me it was normal for them to have white on their tongues from milk. I asked the doctor about it at his 1 month check up, and he said that it looked normal but to let them know if it got any worse. Well, for the past week or two, he's been having a hard time eating off and on. I didn't know what the problem was because there are so many possibilties. I also started having nipple soreness (sorry, TMI) which is a symptom of thrush, but I thought maybe it was just because he wasn't latching on well. I thought maybe he was messed up from getting a bottle. Finally, Thursday night I decided we had thrush. I talked to a lactation consultant Friday morning about the problems we've been having and mentioned that I suspected he might have thrush. She said to call the pediatrician. So we made an appointment and it turns out, yes we do have it. I think he had it first, and then it spread to me. Treatment for me is very easy, but for him we have to put 2 ml of medicine in his mouth 4 times a day for 2 weeks. He doesn't like it much. We also have to wash and sterilize everything constantly until it's all gone. I feel bad for letting him go for so long. I really was concerned about it for a long time, but no one else seemed to think anything was wrong. I hope this fixes all the problems we've been having with feeding. I also hope it helps us get back to our routine that we had going a few weeks ago. I just want him to be able to eat well. Poor baby.

You can see his thrush in this picture. He's actually smiling in this one even though it looks like he's screaming.

That's just further proof that sometimes mothers know better than even the educated doctors. MOTHER'S INTUITION BABY! I'm still waiting on that. haha

It sounds like breastfeeding is going well for you! That's great! Is there really no nipple soreness for you (well except until now)? I guess I have this idea in my head that it doesn't go away for AWHILE, but that's only because I wasn't able to figure out breastfeeding.

Its such a good thing you are both being treated together! Some pediatricians will not treat thrush if the baby has it on their tongue but not on the insides of the mouth and gums. Give it 10 days it will pass. :) great job with the bf! you are doing great!

Oh, I'm so sorry to hear about the thrush. I believe mothers know best, more than doctors since you're the one w/ your child the most! Way to go on figuring it out. I hope that you and Pierce are able to get over it quickly.
